Path of Exile 3.29 Ice Crash Ignite Chieftain Starter Build Guide: The Meta League Starter That Got Buffed
Jul-20-2026 PST Path of ExileSummary
The 3.29 patch notes have arrived, and one of the most powerful league starters from previous patches has not only survived but received a buff, making it even more accessible without requiring you to buy POE currency for expensive gear. Ice Crash Ignite Chieftain remains an incredibly strong build with insane clear speed, respectable single-target damage, and excellent defenses. This guide covers everything you need to know to league start this build, from leveling to endgame scaling.
Core Mechanics
Why Ice Crash?
Ice Crash has 631% base damage effectiveness and 15% quality as extra damage. The skill has low base attack speed, but since you are scaling ignite, you do not need to spam it. On single target, you spam to proc Elemental Overload for 20% more damage. For clearing, one tap explodes the entire screen.
All Damage Can Ignite
The build revolves around the Fulcrum belt (referred to in the video as the belt with "all damage can ignite"). This is a T3 unique, making it relatively cheap and accessible early in the league. You can farm it by running breach hives for Grafit Blood and gambling for belts with specific modifiers. Reducing three attributes and targeting belts with "foul" modifiers increases your chances.
Key Weapon: Razor of the Seven Suns
This weapon provides 174-320 flat physical damage, 100% more damage with ignites, 100% increased burning damage if you've ignited recently, and chance to ignite. This weapon is essential for scaling your ignite damage to endgame levels.
Ascendancy: Chieftain
Chieftain offers several key bonuses for this build:
Tukohama, War Herald grants Fist of War, providing a 90% more damage multiplier. Valako provides maximum resistances. Tasalio, Cleansing Water allows you to stack fire resistance for regeneration and maximum fire resistance, granting significant elemental damage reduction.
Defensive Layers
The build combines multiple defensive layers for excellent survivability:
Maximum Resistances and Block
You can achieve capped attack and spell block. Divine Shield converts blocked physical damage into energy shield recovery, providing sustain. Maximum fire resistance from Chieftain reduces elemental damage taken.
Life and Energy Shield
The build uses The Covenant chest piece, which provides massive damage for ignite builds. Divine Shield regenerates energy shield based on blocked damage. For life recovery, you rely on leech from clusters and gear.
Important Note
If you are running red altars, avoid the "-armor" downside as it will break Divine Shield and leave you with zero energy shield recovery.
Progression Path
Early Leveling
Start as a Berserker using Sunder. This is a tried-and-true leveling strategy that deals excellent damage. Level your axe and follow the POB for gem progression.
Transition to Ignite
Once you have the Fulcrum belt (all damage can ignite), you can transition to Ice Crash Ignite. This typically happens around level 75. Before the belt, you cannot ignite, so stick with slam leveling.
Early Gear
Before acquiring Razor of the Seven Suns, you can use Rebuke of the Vale, which provides a ton of flat damage. Before The Covenant, use a normal armor/energy shield body armor with a six-link.
Scaling Damage
Chance to Ignite
You need to reach 100% chance to ignite for consistent damage. Early on, you can use Combustion Support for 25% extra chance. The passive tree provides additional chance through nodes.
Covered in Ash
Covered in Ash provides 20% increased fire damage taken and 20% less movement speed. You have multiple ways to apply this:
Settling Ash applies it when you stand still for 2 seconds. Since you stand still while attacking, this has high uptime. Infamous Modifiers on helmets grant "all your war cries cover enemies in ash for 5 seconds." This provides 100% uptime on single target.
Pact of Bait and Living Lightning
Living Lightning Support on your auto-exerted Infernal Cry summons minions that follow you. These count as allies for Rallying Cry, which grants approximately 34% more damage with five nearby allies. This is a significant damage steroid with high uptime.
Tinctures
Tinctures are insane for ignite because ignite snapshots your highest damaging instance. You apply the tincture, deal a big ignite, and that ignite lasts for the entire duration. With 4-second ignites and 8-second cooldowns, it has approximately 50% uptime on single target.
Smite
Smite provides extra single-target damage. Use it alongside tinctures for maximum burst on bosses.
Key Gear Pieces
Fulcrum Belt (All Damage Can Ignite)
This is your build-enabling unique. Farm it through breach hives and gambling.
Razor of the Seven Suns
Your endgame weapon. Provides 100% more ignite damage and burning damage.
The Covenant
Provides massive damage for ignite builds. Approximately 90% more damage. With the socket color changes in 3.29, getting off-colors is no longer an issue.
Polaric Devastation
Not required but provides a damage boost. You can substitute with Settling Ash or the infamous mod on helmets.
Gloves with Ignite Proliferation
Ignite Proliferation on gloves is important because it proliferates the ignite from Hinora's Death Fury explosions (250% max HP damage). This creates the insane clear speed for the build.
Accuracy and Resolute Technique
Early on, use Resolute Technique to solve accuracy issues. It is difficult to get enough accuracy early without multiple rolls. Later, once you have accuracy on gear and can reserve Precision on life, you can drop Resolute Technique and take Elemental Overload for more damage. One accuracy roll on gear, combined with a level 21 Precision on Arrogance, is usually sufficient.
Weak Points
Socket Pressure: Shield Charge is not linked to Faster Attacks, making it slightly slower. This is a minor inconvenience.
Button Presses: You need to press Smite and tincture on single target. If you dislike extra buttons, this may not be the build for you.
Slamming Playstyle: Some players dislike the slam playstyle. If you prefer faster skills, consider Righteous Fire instead (check Pox's guide).
Summary
Ice Crash Ignite Chieftain is one of the strongest league starters in Path of Exile 3.29, helping you farm POE currency efficiently so you can scale into endgame gear without relying on trades. It offers insane clear speed through Hinora explosions and ignite proliferation, solid single-target damage through ignite scaling and damage steroids, and excellent defenses through max resistances, block, and Divine Shield recovery. Level as Sunder Berserker, transition to Ice Crash Ignite around level 75 once you have the Fulcrum belt, and scale into Razor of the Seven Suns and The Covenant for endgame. With 13-21 million DPS on a budget, this build handles all content comfortably while remaining fun and satisfying to play.
